Understanding Density & Specific Gravity
Density ($\rho$) is defined as mass per unit volume. In pharmaceutical manufacturing, it is a critical parameter for liquid filling, granulation (bulk density), and raw material identification.
Specific Gravity (SG) is the ratio of the density of a substance to the density of a reference substance (usually water at 25°C). Since water's density is approximately 1 g/mL, Specific Gravity is often numerically close to Density but is unitless.
How to Use This Tool
- Calculate Density: Enter Mass (g) and Volume (mL) to find Density. Useful for quality control of syrups and elixirs (USP <841>).
- Calculate Mass: Enter Density and Volume. Useful for converting liquid raw materials (e.g., Ethanol, Glycerin) from volume to weight for batch manufacturing.
- Calculate Volume: Enter Density and Mass. Useful for determining tank capacity requirements.
